World Centre of Excellence

The application of World Centre of Excellence on Landslide Risk Reduction was called on 4 April 2016 and closed on 1st August 2016. The received application forms were evaluated by the objectives and criteria below and identified through the following steps of screenings, eligibility examination by ICL secretariat, technical evaluation by evaluation committee, and the preliminary examination at 12th session of IPL Global Promotion Committee held at UNESCO on 18 November 2016, and the evaluation from wider scope and endorsement by the Independent of Panel of Experts consisting of 5 members from UNU, UNESCO, and Disaster Reduction experts, and finally the following twenty recommended candidates of WCoEs were reported and approved by the Ad-Hoc IPL-Global Promotion Committee on 29 May 2017 at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The list of WCoEs 2017-2020 was released and certificates were awarded by the chair of the IPL-GPC, Qunli Han (UNESCO) in the Recognition of ICL and IPL Activities session of the Fourth World Landslide Forum held in Ljubljana on 30 May 2017.

Objectives of WCoE:

To strengthen the International Programme on Landslides (IPL) and IPL Global Promotion Committee;
To create “A Global Network of entities contributing to landslide risk reduction”;
To implement the ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships 2015-2025 for global promotion of understanding and reducing landslide disaster risk; and
To improve the global recognition of “Landslide Risk Reduction” and its social-economic relevance, and entities contributing to this field.

Criteria for WCoE Candidates:

Governmental and non-governmental entities such as universities, agencies, and other institutions, and their subsidiary entities (faculties, departments, centres, divisions or others) which meet the following two conditions:

• Contributing to “Landslide Disaster Risk Reduction”; and

• Willing to support IPL intellectually, practically and financially by either joining ICL or/and contributing to IPL-GPC and promote “landslide research and disaster risk reduction” on a regional and/or global scale in a mutually beneficial manner.
